Horror Celluloid- The Gift (2015)

Remember running into that old classmate after not seeing them for a long time. Then, he shows up at the new house without being told an address.

The Gift (2015) centers around Simon (Jason Bateman) who moves to Los Angeles with his wife, Robyn (Rebecca Hall), for new employment. After acquiring a new home, they go shopping for various furnishings. Simon is being watched by an odd man. The odd man turns out to be an former classmate named Gordon (Joel Edgerton). Simon & Robyn complete their shopping and say goodbye to Gordon…or so they thought. Later, Robyn is unpacking and Gordon appears. He gets their number and leaves. This is the beginning of an astonishing series of events leading to one of this year’s best climaxes.

Joel Edgerton has written and directed a debut that would make Alfred Hitchcock glow.  Jason Bateman inhabits a darker persona light years from Arrested Development in one of 2015’s creepiest performances. Edgerton and Bateman have great chemistry in this enigmatic thriller.  Viewers will be in shock and awe for this independent masterpiece. Bateman should be a dark horse for a Best Actor nod at the next Oscar ceremony. Edgerton’s performance and script are nomination worthy as well.
